Reid's Ride

Matt Hollas_familyshot

One in every 110 children are born with Autism every day and we don’t know why.  What is clear is that though there is no cure for Autism, intensive, early treatment can make an enormous difference in the lives of many children with the disorder.

My nephew Reid was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. Now at the age of 10, he has overcome many obstacles in his short life but still battles every day. For this reason I have organized Reid’s Ride, on Saturday, September 11-12, 2010 where I will take on the challenge of a 24-hour solo bike ride, to benefit the Autism Society of Colorado. I am aiming to raise donations to help children like Reid and their families.

During the event, it is my personal goal to ride 300-400 miles over the span of 24-hours. In doing so, I am hopeful that individuals and organizations alike will meet my challenge in the form of donations that will be pledged to the Autism Society of Colorado on a “per mile” basis that I ride, or a flat donation.
If there is anything the public can learn from Reid's and other children’s on-going battle with Autism it is that the human spirit is indestructible. It may be hidden under layers of confusion and tics or nonsensical comments but shining through it all is their beautiful spirit.

Movies on their terms: Autism groups, AMC create screenings where joyful noises reign

By Lisa Kennedy
Denver Post Film Critic

"We can't go see regular movies," said David Bukovinsky, whose 6-year-old son, Connor, has autism (younger sister Megan does not). Connor "can be disruptive. It's yelling. He likes verbal stimulation. Megan sees a lot of movies, but then, she's typical. But we can never see them all together."

So here the Bukovinskys sit — Connor and Megan between parents David and Laurie — awaiting an experience that many "neurotypicals" (a name those with autism have given those not affected) take for granted.

Movies, be they fresh or rehashed, magical or mundane, are the stuff of childhood, of family outings — arguably of American identity. Our love affair with them begins early. They bind us to one another differently than television. They invite us into invented realms while teaching us to share space with strangers. They are among the rituals of American inclusion.

David Bukovinsky, and his children Connor, 6, and Megan, 4, watch the show. (Craig F. Walker | The Denver Post)

So what must it be like to feel unwelcome because the behaviors associated with autism can be misunderstood and disruptive? Because, as Zaborek says, your kid flaps her arms, or growls, or kicks her feet out while watching a flick? "I stopped taking her to movies because I was too nervous."

Treating Autism With Marijuana

By Zachary Barr
Colorado Matters, Colorado Public Radio

Some parents are giving their autistic children marijuana. But critics say marijuana can harm a developing brain. We get both perspectives from Colorado Public Radio's Zachary Barr. Then we talk to Betty Lehman of the Autism Society of Colorado about a new law that requires some insurers to pay for a proven autism therapy.
