The Autism Society of Colorado (ASC) was founded in 1970 by Geri Chestor, parent of a child with autism. Early efforts by Geri and a small group of parents broke ground for the admission of children into public school settings within the state of Colorado.
ASC's second major accomplishment followed in 1982 with the opening of Chestor House, a group home for people with autism based on the theory of “Gentle Teaching.” No longer under the directly affiliated with ASC, Chestor House continues to operate as an out-of-home placement and vocational support agency.
Since those early times, ASC has evolved as an influential voice for all people with autism and related disorders and their families within Colorado. For nearly four decades the Autism Society of Colorado has provided needed support and information to the estimated more than 10,000 individuals affected by autism spectrum disorders in this state. |
